This haunting image captures the devastating aftermath of the bombardment of Izmir, Turkey, in March 1915, during the First World War. The city, then known as Smyrna, was a major port and cultural center in the Ottoman Empire. In response to the Ottoman Empire's entry into the war on the side of the Central Powers, the Allied powers, including Britain, launched a naval bombardment of the city. The results were catastrophic. The photograph was taken just 24 hours after the bombardment, and the destruction is evident in every direction. The once vibrant cityscape is reduced to a scene of ruin and devastation. Buildings are in shambles, their facades blown apart, and the streets are littered with debris. Smoke rises from the wreckage, and the waterfront is dotted with damaged ships. The bombardment of Izmir was a turning point in the Eastern Front of the First World War. It marked the end of Ottoman control over the city, which was later occupied by the Allies. The event also led to the expulsion of the Ottoman Greek and Armenian populations, resulting in a significant demographic shift in the city. This photograph is a poignant reminder of the devastating effects of war and the destruction of history.
