EDITORS COMMENTS
This haunting image captures the devastating aftermath of the bombardment of Izmir, Turkey, following the British attack on the city during the First World War in March 1915. The photograph was taken just 24 hours after the bombardment, revealing the extensive damage and destruction that had befallen the once vibrant and bustling port city. The ruins of buildings, some reduced to little more than piles of rubble, stretch as far as the eye can see. The eastern part of the city, which was the main target of the bombardment, bears the brunt of the destruction. The Ottoman Turkish flag, which flies proudly in the foreground, serves as a poignant reminder of the city's history and the resilience of its people in the face of such devastation. The campaign, known as the Siege of Smyrna or the Battle of Smyrna, was a significant event during the First World War, with the city changing hands several times between Turkish and Greek forces before ultimately being occupied by the Greeks. This photograph offers a glimpse into the devastating effects of war on a civilian population and serves as an important historical record of a pivotal moment in the history of Izmir and Turkey.
