EDITORS COMMENTS
Plate 10 from "Fishes of Economic Importance of the USSR" by Lev Semenovich Berg and colleagues (1949): Huso huso, the Beluga Sturgeon This illustration showcases the majestic Beluga Sturgeon (Huso huso), also known as the White Sturgeon or Beluga, from Plate 10 of "Fishes of Economic Importance of the USSR" published in 1949. The work was authored by a team of esteemed Soviet scientists, led by Lev Semenovich Berg. The Beluga Sturgeon is a large, forked bony fish belonging to the Acipenseridae family, which is part of the larger superorder Acipensiformes within the class Actinopterygii. This impressive species is characterized by its elongated, cylindrical body, reaching lengths of up to 5 meters (16.4 feet) and weighing up to 600 kg (1,323 lbs). The Beluga Sturgeon is a true aquatic marvel, with a distinctive, mottled grayish-green back and a white underbelly. The Beluga Sturgeon is not only a fascinating creature but also holds significant cultural and historical importance. It is the largest sturgeon species and is often referred to as the "sea caviar" due to its valuable roe, or eggs, which have been harvested for centuries. The Beluga Sturgeon is also the only fish species that is considered both a fish and a cetacean, as it shares certain characteristics with whales, such as having a fat-filled body and a dorsal fin that is barely visible. This illustration captures the Beluga Sturgeon in its natural daytime habitat, displaying its elegant form and unique features. The image serves as a testament to the rich biodiversity of the USSR's waters and the dedication of scientists like Lev Semenovich Berg to documenting and preserving these precious natural resources.
