EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative image, the damaged hull of HMS Vindictive lies at anchor in the port of Zeebrugge, Belgium, following the daring and historic Zeebrugge Raid of April 23, 1918, during the First World War. The Arrogant-class protected cruiser, proudly serving in the Royal Navy, had been subjected to intense enemy fire during the operation, resulting in significant damage to her upperworks. The Zeebrugge Raid was a bold and audacious attack on the German naval base at Zeebrugge, aimed at disrupting the enemy's U-boat operations in the English Channel. The mission was a success, with the British forces managing to destroy several enemy vessels and damage others, while also capturing the port. Despite her battered appearance, HMS Vindictive would go on to see further action in the Second Ostend Raid on May 10, 1918, where she was ultimately sunk as a blockship to prevent the Germans from reoccupying the port. The bravery and sacrifice of the crew of HMS Vindictive and their comrades during these raids have left a lasting legacy, and their heroism continues to be celebrated. Today, a section of the bow of HMS Vindictive remains preserved in Ostend harbour as a poignant and enduring memorial to the men who served on the ship and the historic events of the Zeebrugge and Ostend Raids. This evocative image offers a glimpse into the past, transporting us back to a time of war and courage, and serving as a testament to the indomitable spirit of the Royal Navy during World War 1.
