EDITORS COMMENTS
1. Title: "Henry Rogers of Cornwall: A Man of Disputes and Violence, 1735" This evocative image captures the infamous figure of Henry Rogers, a Cornish landowner who became notorious for his refusal to relinquish disputed land, despite legal decisions ruling against him. Rogers' defiance led to a series of violent confrontations, earning him the unsavory moniker of a "nasty man." In the late 1730s, a land dispute arose between Rogers and his neighbors over a parcel of land in Cornwall. After several legal proceedings, the courts ruled in favor of Rogers' adversaries. However, Rogers, unwilling to accept the decision, took matters into his own hands. He armed himself and his supporters, and began to intimidate and threaten those who dared to settle on the disputed land. Matters came to a head in 1735 when Rogers and his men confronted a group of laborers who were working on the disputed land. In the ensuing melee, several persons were shot and killed, including one man named John Trelawny. Rogers' violent actions sparked outrage in the community and beyond, leading to a manhunt for the elusive landowner. Despite the public outcry, Rogers managed to evade capture for some time. However, he was eventually apprehended and brought to trial. The court found him guilty of manslaughter and sentenced him to hang. Rogers met his end on the gallows in 1736, leaving behind a legacy of violence and defiance. This historical photograph, taken from the Mary Evans Prints Online collection, offers a glimpse into the turbulent past of Cornwall and the lengths some individuals would go to protect their land and pride. The image serves as a reminder of the complexities and challenges of rural life in 18th century England.
