EDITORS COMMENTS
In this elegant 18th-century portrait, Henrietta Howard, Countess of Suffolk, is depicted in all her regal beauty. Born Henrietta Howard in 1681, she was the illegitimate daughter of Charles, 3rd Earl of Suffolk, and his mistress, Elizabeth Ann Foster. Despite her humble beginnings, Henrietta would go on to become one of the most influential women of her time. At the young age of 17, Henrietta was introduced to King George I, who was immediately taken with her charm and wit. She became his mistress and served as the Queen Consort in all but name until George I's death in 1727. Henrietta's influence over the King was significant, and she played a key role in the political and social life of the court. After George I's death, Henrietta married the Hon. George Berkeley, a wealthy and influential politician. The marriage was a happy one, and Henrietta continued to be a prominent figure in society. In 1767, at the age of 86, Henrietta passed away, leaving behind a legacy as one of the most powerful and influential women in English history. This portrait of Henrietta, painted in the mid-18th century, captures her grace and sophistication. She is dressed in the latest fashion, with a flowing robe of silk and lace, and her hair is styled in the elaborate curls popular during the period. Her expressive eyes and delicate features convey a sense of intelligence and strength, reflecting the indomitable spirit that defined Henrietta Howard, Countess of Suffolk. This portrait is a testament to the remarkable life of a woman who rose from humble beginnings to become a powerful and influential figure in English history. It serves as a reminder of the complex and fascinating world of the 18th century, a time of political intrigue, social upheaval, and artistic innovation.
