EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures a group of women and soldiers gathered in a lush, green field at Malvern, Worcestershire during the summer of 1917. Amidst the military uniforms and camping equipment, two women stand out in their colorful costumes, acting as fortune tellers. The tall woman on the left, with a striking red cap adorned with a star, is identified as Lucy Auerbach. Her companion, dressed in a flowing, patterned gown and wearing a white headdress, is unidentified. Lucy Auerbach, born in 1890, was a well-known figure in Malvern during the First World War. She gained the nickname "Boo" and was a popular local character, known for her psychic abilities and storytelling. During the war, she and her friend provided entertainment for the soldiers stationed in the area by offering fortune-telling sessions. The soldiers, seeking a brief respite from the harsh realities of the war, would gather around Boo and her companion, hoping to catch a glimpse of their futures. The soldiers in the photograph are dressed in their military uniforms, some wearing caps or hats, while others have set up tents in the background. The rural, idyllic setting of the field at Malvern, with its rolling hills and verdant grass, stands in stark contrast to the harsh conditions of the battlefields. This photograph offers a poignant reminder of the human spirit and the need for comfort and connection, even in the midst of war.
