EDITORS COMMENTS
Grand Prince Sergei Mikhailovich and Grand Princess Elizaveta Feodorovna (nee Princess Elisabeth or Ella of Hesse-Darmstadt) gracefully pose for a photograph in opulent 17th century attire at the Winter Ball held in St. Petersburg in 1903. The grand event was organized to commemorate the bicentenary of the city's founding. Grand Prince Sergei, the fifth eldest son of Emperor Nicholas II, is dressed in a richly embroidered velvet doublet, adorned with gold braid and pearls, and a matching breechcloth. His collar is bedecked with diamonds and rubies, while a golden sash with the Order of St. Andrew the First-Called encircles his waist. His hair is meticulously styled in the fashion of the time, with a long, flowing wig and a powdered forehead. Grand Princess Elizaveta, the elegant and sophisticated daughter of Grand Duke Louis IV of Hesse-Darmstadt, wears an exquisite gown of deep blue velvet, adorned with intricate gold and silver embroidery and beading. Her high-necked bodice is adorned with lace and pearls, and her long, flowing sleeves are trimmed with fur. Her hair is styled in elaborate curls, held in place with pearl and diamond combs. The couple's opulent costumes are a testament to the grandeur and splendor of the Winter Ball, a fitting celebration of the rich history and culture of St. Petersburg. The photograph captures the essence of the occasion, with the couple's regal bearing and the elegant surroundings reflecting the refinement and sophistication of the Russian aristocracy in the early 20th century.
