EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures a poignant moment in the life of Grand Duchess George of Russia (1876-1940), formerly Princess Maria of Greece, during World War I. With her husband, Grand Duke George Alexandrovich, arrested and executed by the Bolsheviks in January 1919, the Grand Duchess found herself stranded in England. In this image, the Grand Duchess is seen surrounded by her daughters, Princesses Nina and Xenia, as well as members of her household, including Miss Ramsing, a lady-in-waiting to Princess Margaret of Denmark, and the Steckels, who served as governesses to her children. The group is gathered in the hospital, with the Grand Duchess seated and dressed in a simple nursing uniform, demonstrating her dedication to the cause. The photograph, dated 1915, offers a glimpse into the resilience and compassion of the Grand Duchess during a time of great upheaval and hardship. This image is a poignant reminder of the humanitarian efforts of the Russian royal family and their commitment to helping those in need during the tumultuous era of World War I.
