EDITORS COMMENTS
In this striking photograph, General Sir Cecil Frederick Nevil MacReady (1862-1946) is seen beginning his tenure as Commissioner of the London Metropolitan Police in 1918. Having served a distinguished career in the British Army, MacReady brought a unique perspective to the role as he transitioned from military to civilian leadership. Born in India, MacReady joined the British Army in 1881 and rose through the ranks, serving in senior staff appointments during the First World War. His military career culminated in his appointment as General Officer Commanding the 1st Division in 1917. However, MacReady's military prowess did not go unnoticed by the civilian authorities. In 1918, he was approached to take on the role of Commissioner of the London Metropolitan Police, a position he held for two years. This appointment marked a significant moment in British history, as the country was still reeling from the aftermath of the First World War and the challenges of maintaining law and order in a rapidly changing society. MacReady's military background proved invaluable in his new role, as he implemented modern policing techniques and strategies to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the Metropolitan Police Force. He also oversaw the expansion of the force to meet the demands of a growing city and the challenges of the post-war era. This photograph captures a pivotal moment in MacReady's illustrious career, as he embarks on a new chapter in public service. The image serves as a reminder of the enduring legacy of military leaders in shaping the course of civilian life and the importance of adaptability and innovation in times of change.
