EDITORS COMMENTS
This historic photograph captures the moment of unity and triumph as Giuseppe Garibaldi and Vittorio Emanuele II, the King of Sardinia, entered Milan on March 17, 1861. The image was taken in the Piazza del Duomo, the heart of Milan, Italy, marking the final victory of the Risorgimento, or Italian Unification. Garibaldi, the legendary Italian patriot and military leader, had led his Red Shirts, a volunteer army, from the south to take control of Milan and other northern Italian cities. King Vittorio Emanuele II, who ruled the Kingdom of Sardinia, had previously controlled only the northern and central regions of Italy. The unification of these areas under one Italian flag was a long-awaited goal for many Italians, who had been seeking independence from foreign powers for decades. In this photograph, Garibaldi is shown wearing his distinctive red shirt and riding a white horse, while Vittorio Emanuele II rides in a carriage. The crowd that gathered to welcome them is a testament to the excitement and anticipation of the Italian people for a unified Italy. The Italian flag, which had only been adopted a few months earlier, is prominently displayed in the background. This photograph is a powerful reminder of a pivotal moment in Italian history, when the dream of a unified Italy became a reality. It is a testament to the courage and determination of Garibaldi and his followers, and to the vision of a united Italy that inspired generations of Italians. The image has been preserved in the Mary Evans Picture Library, a leading provider of historical and cultural images, and continues to be a source of inspiration and education for scholars, students, and history enthusiasts around the world.
