EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative print from the early 20th century, we witness a flag ceremony taking place in France during the Third Republic (1901). The scene is set against a backdrop of a crisp, winter morning, with the sun casting a warm, golden light over the grand, vertical flagpole. The tricolor French flag, featuring the blue, white, and red stripes and the blue square bearing the white Gallic rooster, flutters gently in the breeze. President Loubet, dressed in a formal suit and wearing a top hat, presides over the ceremony with a sense of solemn dignity. He stands at attention, his hand resting on the handle of a sword, as he watches the lowering of the old flag and the raising of the new one. The ceremony is being documented by a group of men, one of whom is holding up a large, ornate camera, while another takes notes in a notebook. To the right, we see the iconic Eiffel Tower, its iron structure framed against the clear blue sky. In the foreground, a group of soldiers stands at attention, their rifles at the ready, while a young boy in a red cap and blue jacket watches the proceedings with wide-eyed fascination. The scene is filled with a sense of national pride and tradition, as the colors of the French flag are raised once again to represent the values and ideals of the Third Republic. This beautiful, colorful illustration or engraving, which appears to have been published in a French newspaper such as Le Petit Journal or Le Journal, captures the essence of a proud and patriotic moment in French history. The print, with its rich details and vibrant colors, is a testament to the enduring power of symbolism and the importance of national identity.
