EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative portrait captures the distinguished visage of Fabian Philipps (1601-1690), a prolific and influential Royalist writer during the tumultuous period of English history known as the Civil Wars and the Interregnum. Born in London in the early 17th century, Philipps was educated at the University of Cambridge and went on to become a prominent figure in the Royalist cause. During the English Civil War, Philipps wrote passionately for the King and the established Church, penning works such as "A Seasonable Discourse of the Present Troubles" (1642) and "A True and Perfect Discovery of the Treasonable Intents and Practices of the Late Troublesome and Seditious Party" (1649). His writings were instrumental in rallying support for the monarchy and opposing the revolutionary forces that sought to overthrow it. Following the Restoration of the monarchy in 1660, Philipps continued to write and publish, producing works on history, politics, and theology. One of his most notable works from this period is "The History of the Rebellion and Civil Wars in England" (1679-1682), a comprehensive account of the English Civil War and its aftermath. This portrait of Fabian Philipps, likely taken in later life, conveys a sense of wisdom and gravitas befitting a man who had lived through some of the most tumultuous events in English history. With a stern gaze and a carefully arranged drapery, the artist has captured the intellectual and moral depth of a man who dedicated his life to the defense of the monarchy and the preservation of the established order.
