EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the enigmatic and brilliant author, Enid Bagnold, in the prime of her literary career. Born on September 2, 1889, in Shanghai, China, Bagnold would go on to become one of the most celebrated English writers of the 20th century. The image, taken likely in the 1930s or 1940s, shows Bagnold with a thoughtful expression, her piercing gaze fixed on an unseen horizon. Her signature short, curly hair frames her face, and her elegant attire speaks to her refined sensibilities. Bagnold's literary accomplishments are numerous and varied. She is best known for her novel "National Velvet," which was published in 1935 and tells the story of a young girl who trains and rides a wild horse in the annual Grand National Steeplechase. The book was an instant success and was later adapted into a beloved film starring Elizabeth Taylor. Bagnold also wrote plays, including "The Chalk Garden," which was produced on Broadway in 1955. Despite her success, Bagnold led a largely private life. She was married twice and had three children. She spent much of her time traveling and living abroad, from England to France to Egypt. Her writing was influenced by her experiences and observations of the world around her, and she was known for her vivid and evocative prose. Bagnold passed away on October 1, 1981, leaving behind a rich literary legacy. Her works continue to be read and admired by generations of readers, and her impact on English literature is undeniable. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the remarkable woman behind the words, a woman who captured the imagination of readers with her stories of horses, love, and the human spirit.
