EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative photograph, we find three eldest children of King Ferdinand I and Queen Marie of Romania, Princesses Elisabetta, Carol, and Marie, captured in a candid moment during the early 20th century. The image, taken in December 1905, showcases the siblings' youthful charm and elegant attire, reflecting their royal heritage. The eldest of the three, Princess Elisabetta, or Elizabeth, is seen on the left, her gaze fixed on the camera with a serious expression. She was born on July 21, 1894, and was the eldest daughter of the Romanian monarchs. Her maternal grandparents were Prince Alfred, Duke of Edinburgh, and Grand Duchess Maria Alexandrovna of Russia. In the middle, with a gentle smile, is Princess Carol, later known as King Carol II. Born on January 19, 1893, he was the eldest son of the royal couple. His paternal grandparents were King Albert I of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha and Queen Elisabeth in Bavaria. On the right, the youngest of the three, Princess Marie, or Maria, is pictured with a demure expression. She was born on August 28, 1900, and was the youngest daughter of King Ferdinand and Queen Marie. Her maternal grandparents were also Prince Alfred, Duke of Edinburgh, and Grand Duchess Maria Alexandrovna of Russia. This photograph is an intriguing glimpse into the lives of these three eldest children of the Romanian royal family, who would grow up to play significant roles in their country's history. The image, sourced from Mary Evans Prints Online, is a valuable historical document that offers a unique perspective on the lives of these grandchildren of Prince Alfred of Edinburgh and Saxe-Coburg.
