EDITORS COMMENTS
This print depicts the Sack of Antwerp, a pivotal moment in the Eighty Years' War (1568-1648) between Spain and the Dutch Rebels for their quest for independence. The event took place on November 4, 1576, during the reign of Philip II of Spain. The Spanish Tercios, a formidable military force, are shown attacking the city, which was then a prosperous commercial center in the Spanish Netherlands. The bridge over the moat leading to the city has been breached, and the Tercios are seen advancing, their banners unfurled, ready to besiege the city. The fall of Antwerp marked a significant loss for the Dutch, as the city was a major economic powerhouse and its capture allowed Spain to tighten its grip on the region. The engraving, a facsimile of an original by Frans Hogenberg, vividly portrays the chaos and fury of war, with smoke rising from burning buildings and the cries of the besieged echoing in the background. The use of color adds depth and emotion to the image, transporting us back to the 16th century and the tumultuous age of the Spanish Empire.
