Born in London on December 2, 1838, Abbott was initially educated at home before attending King's College London and later teaching at various schools. He began his teaching career in 1860 at the City of London School, where he remained for over 30 years. During this time, he also served as the headmaster of the Highgate School from 1884 to 1892. Abbott's literary prowess was not fully realized until the publication of "Flatland" in 1884, a satirical novel that explores the concept of dimensions and the limitations of human perception.
