This striking portrait captures Edward Sackville, the fourth Earl of Dorset, in the prime of his political career. Born in 1591, Sackville was a prominent statesman and courtier during the reigns of King James I and King Charles I. He held various important positions in the English government, including Lord Chamberlain to the queen, a role that placed him at the heart of the royal court. Sackville's political acumen and diplomatic skills were highly valued by the monarchy. He played a key role in negotiating peace with Scotland in 1619 and was instrumental in the passing of several important pieces of legislation, including the Marriage Act of 1625. Sackville's influence extended beyond the political sphere, as he was also a patron of the arts and supported the works of notable playwrights such as Ben Jonson and John Fletcher. Despite his many accomplishments, Sackville's life was not without controversy. He was involved in several high-profile disputes, including a long-standing feud with the Earl of Essex and a bitter legal battle over the ownership of the Frankfort Forest.
