EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the intensity and camaraderie of a Davis Cup doubles match between New Zealand's tennis legend, Captain Anthony Frederick Wilding, and his Australian partner, Norman Brookes. The image, taken in 1914, represents the last competitive tennis matches played by Wilding, who was a four-time Wimbledon Champion (1910-1913). The Davis Cup tie in New York was a significant event in tennis history, with Wilding and Brookes aiming to bring the trophy back to their respective countries. However, the matches were overshadowed by the looming threat of war in Europe. With the outbreak of World War I in August 1914, both Wilding and Brookes felt the call to duty. Wilding, who had already served in the South African War, enlisted in the New Zealand Expeditionary Force, while Brookes joined the Australian Imperial Force. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the intersection of sport and history. Wilding and Brookes' last competitive matches on the tennis court were a prelude to their military service and eventual sacrifice. Wilding tragically lost his life near Neuve Chapelle, France, on 9 May 1915, during the Battle of Aubers Ridge. His courage and dedication to both tennis and his country continue to be celebrated in the annals of sporting and military history. This image, a testament to the spirit of competition and the human spirit, is a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made during times of war.
