On the left, a wretched woman, with a forlorn expression and tattered clothing, represents the wife of a drunkard. Her once-youthful face is now marred by the ravages of time and poverty, a sad testament to the destructive power of gin. On the right, an elegantly dressed woman, adorned with jewels and lace, is the wife of the landlord. She pours a drink for a customer, her countenance untroubled as she coins "bright gold" from the ruin of others' lives.
