EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image captures the aftermath of a tragic event in the history of Thames river transport: the explosion and subsequent sinking of the paddle-steamer Cricket in Limehouse Reach in 1847. The Cricket, a popular and well-used vessel, was en route from London Bridge to Woolwich when disaster struck. The cause of the explosion, which occurred in the engine room, remains unclear, but it is believed that a spark ignited volatile vapors from the coal used to fuel the steam engine. The explosion was felt throughout the ship, causing panic among the passengers and crew. Some managed to escape by jumping into the river, but many were trapped below deck or unable to reach safety in time. The Cricket, once a symbol of progress and convenience on the Thames, quickly became a dangerous and ominous sight as smoke billowed from her wreckage and the water around her began to boil. The scene depicted in this photograph is one of chaos and destruction. The Cricket, once a proud and powerful vessel, lies broken and sinking in the murky waters of Limehouse Reach. The smoke and steam rising from the wreckage create an eerie and otherworldly atmosphere, while the onlookers on the banks of the Thames bear witness to the tragic event. This photograph is a poignant reminder of the risks and dangers inherent in transportation technology, even in an era when such advances were seen as the height of innovation and progress. The sinking of the Cricket also led to significant safety improvements in the design and construction of steamships, ensuring that similar tragedies would be avoided in the future.
