EDITORS COMMENTS

This stunning 14th century print depicts Marguerite de Flandre, the elegant and enigmatic wife of Jean de Montfort, duc de Bretagne. Marguerite was born in 1323 as the daughter of Robert III, Count of Flanders, and Isabelle of Artois. In 1341, she married Jean de Montfort, who was then the Duke of Brittany. Their union was significant as it strengthened the ties between the powerful houses of Flanders and Brittany. Marguerite's exquisite attire in this print reflects the opulence and grandeur of the 14th century. She wears a richly embroidered gown, adorned with intricate floral motifs and delicate pearls. Her headdress, composed of a veil and a diadem, adds to her regal appearance. The delicate lace collar, known as a "raiment," further accentuates her refined style. Historical records suggest that Marguerite was a patron of the arts and a generous benefactor to religious institutions. She was also known for her intelligence and diplomatic skills, which were crucial in navigating the complex political landscape of the time. Her marriage to Jean de Montfort brought about a period of prosperity and stability in Brittany, and she is remembered as a beloved and respected figure in Breton history. This evocative print offers a glimpse into the rich and complex world of 14th century Europe, transporting us back in time to an era of opulence, power, and intrigue. The intricate details of Marguerite's costume, from the embroidery to the lace, serve as a testament to the artistry and craftsmanship of the time. This image of Marguerite de Flandre, the gracious and powerful duchess of Brittany, continues to fascinate and inspire us to this day.
