EDITORS COMMENTS
In this image from the annals of ancient Greek mythology, Coronis, the beautiful daughter of King Coronaeus of Phocis, is depicted in a moment of desperate flight. Pursued relentlessly by the amorous advances of the sea god Neptune, or Poseidon, Coronis seeks refuge and protection from the goddess Athene. The scene unfolds against a backdrop of classical grandeur, with the verdant landscape of Phocis stretching out in the background. Coronis, her long, flowing tunic billowing behind her, flees in terror from the advances of the powerful Neptune, who is shown in the image as a towering figure with trident in hand. Desperate and distraught, Coronis turns to Athene for help. The wise and compassionate goddess, who is often depicted with an owl as her symbol, extends her hand in a gesture of protection and salvation. In this instance, however, Athene chooses to save Coronis in a most unusual way. Rather than shielding her from Neptune's advances, she transforms the hapless maiden into a crow. This transformation, which is recounted in various ancient Greek sources, including those of the poet Aratus and the historian Pausanias, spared Coronis from the unwanted attentions of Neptune and allowed her to live out her days in the form of a bird. The image captures the poignant moment of transformation, with Coronis' human form melting away to reveal the feathers and beak of a crow. This evocative print, from the extensive collection of classical and historical images available at Mary Evans Picture Library, offers a glimpse into the rich and intriguing world of ancient Greek mythology, with its complex characters, dramatic tales, and enduring themes. Whether used as a decorative element in a home or office, or as a source of inspiration for artistic or scholarly pursuits, this image is sure to captivate and engage those who encounter it.
