EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning Japanese woodblock print captures the full-length portrait of Commodore Matthew C. Perry (1794-1858), an American naval officer renowned for his role in opening Japan to the Western world. The image, created between 1850 and 1900, showcases Perry in his full naval uniform, complete with a hat adorned with gold braid and a sash bearing the stars and stripes of the United States. Perry's historic voyage to Japan began in 1852, when he led a fleet of four American warships to the shores of Uraga Bay. The Japanese government, wary of foreign influence and isolationist by nature, had long refused to engage with the Western world. Perry's arrival marked a turning point, as he presented the Japanese with a letter from President Millard Fillmore, requesting diplomatic and trade relations. The Japanese response was initially hostile, with the samurai warriors preparing to defend their shores. However, Perry's persistence and the subsequent arrival of more American ships in 1854 led to the signing of the Treaty of Kanagawa. This treaty opened Japan to trade with the United States and other Western nations, marking the beginning of a new era in Japanese history. This woodblock print is a testament to the cultural exchange that followed Perry's visit. Japanese artists were fascinated by the Western world and its people, and this print reflects their interpretation of Perry's appearance and the significance of his mission. The intricate details of the print, from Perry's uniform to the delicate brushwork of the background, demonstrate the skill and artistry of the woodblock printmakers of the time.
