EDITORS COMMENTS
Colonel Victor Barker, born Valerie Arkell-Smith in 1895, is depicted in this striking photograph in his military uniform. Barker, who lived most of his life as a man, is an intriguing figure in British history. He served in the British Army during World War I and II, rising to the rank of colonel. Barker's deception came to light only after his death in 1960, when it was revealed that he had married a woman named Dorothy Barker in 1937, without disclosing his true gender. Valerie Arkell-Smith was born in London and grew up in a middle-class family. She showed an early interest in military life and adopted the persona of Victor Barker in her late teens. Barker joined the army in 1914 and served with distinction during World War I. He was wounded in action and received several decorations for his bravery. After the war, Barker continued to live as a man, working as a civil servant and later joining the British Security Service during World War II. He met Dorothy in the late 1930s and the two married in 1937. Dorothy was unaware of Barker's true gender until after his death. Barker's deception was only discovered when Dorothy applied for a pension after his death. The military authorities were shocked and began an investigation, which led to the discovery of Barker's true identity. The revelation caused a scandal and generated widespread media attention. Despite the controversy, Barker's military career and bravery were not called into question. He had served his country with distinction and had been respected and admired by his colleagues. Barker's story is a fascinating example of gender identity and the complexities of human nature. This photograph captures the enigmatic figure of Colonel Victor Barker, a woman who lived most of her life as a man, in his military uniform, a reminder of a remarkable and intriguing chapter in British history.
