EDITORS COMMENTS
1. Title: A Native of Chile Prepares to Strike His Ball during a Game of El Sueca, 18th Century. This image transports us back in time to the 18th century in Chile, where we find a native golfer poised to strike his ball during a round of El Sueca, an early form of golf. El Sueca, also known as Chilean golf, is believed to have originated in the late 16th or early 17th century, making it one of the oldest known forms of the sport. The game of El Sueca was unique to Chile and differed significantly from the more familiar Scottish version of golf. Instead of using a standard golf club, players used a stick called a "chuco," which was typically made from a single piece of wood, around 1.5 meters long. The ball, known as a "sueco," was made from a compressed mixture of tree sap and animal fat, covered with a layer of cork or leather. In this photograph, the native golfer is seen wearing traditional clothing, including a wide-brimmed hat and a long, loose tunic. He holds the chuco in both hands, his eyes focused intently on the ball as he takes aim. The rugged terrain in the background, with its rocky outcroppings and sparse vegetation, provides a stark contrast to the lush, green fairways and manicured greens of modern golf courses. The game of El Sueca was popular among the indigenous peoples of Chile and was often played as a communal activity, with groups of players gathering together to enjoy a day of friendly competition. The simplicity of the game, combined with its rich history and cultural significance, continues to captivate golf enthusiasts and historians alike. This photograph, taken from the extensive collection of Mary Evans Picture Library, offers a rare glimpse into the past, allowing us to appreciate the evolution of golf from its humble beginnings in Chile to the global phenomenon it is today.
