EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the bravery and determination of the London Scottish Regiment during their charge against the German trenches in France on the night of October 31, 1914. Known as the "Charge of the London Scottish," this daring attack took place during the early stages of the First World War and is a significant moment in the history of the British Army. The London Scottish, also known as the "Hodden Grey" due to their distinctive tartan kilts, were part of the 1st Battalion, Royal Fusiliers. In the early hours of October 31, they were ordered to attack the German lines near the village of Les Tourets, north of Arras. The photograph shows the soldiers advancing through the muddy no-man's land, their faces set with determination and focus, as they prepare to engage the enemy. Despite being heavily outnumbered and outgunned, the London Scottish pressed on, managing to take several German trenches before being forced to withdraw. The charge resulted in heavy casualties on both sides, but the bravery and tenacity of the London Scottish were recognized with several awards, including the Victoria Cross. This photograph is a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by the soldiers of the London Scottish and the other brave men and women who served during the First World War. It is a powerful image that continues to resonate with us today, inspiring awe and admiration for the courage and resilience of those who fought in the trenches of France and Flanders.
