EDITORS COMMENTS
This commemorative illustration pays tribute to the legendary Charge of the Light Brigade during the Battle of Balaklava in the Crimean War, which took place on October 25, 1854. The event, famous for its bravery and miscommunication, saw the cavalry of the 17th Lancers, 13th Light Dragoons, 4th Light Dragoons, and 8th Hussars galloping towards the Russian artillery batteries. This image, published on the Jubilee of the event in 1875, was based on a sketch by Lord Tredegar, a participant in the charge and a member of the 17th Lancers. The cavalrymen are depicted in the rear, preparing for the charge with determined expressions and raised sabers. The 17th Lancers, in red coats and black facings, lead the charge, followed closely by the 13th Light Dragoons in blue uniforms, the 4th Light Dragoons in green, and the 8th Hussars in dark blue and red. The horses, with their manes and tails flying, add to the sense of movement and energy in the scene. The Battle of Balaklava took place during the Crimean War, a conflict between Russia and an alliance of European powers, including Britain and France. The Charge of the Light Brigade became a symbol of British military valor and is still remembered as one of the most daring cavalry charges in history. This illustration, with its intricate details and historical significance, is an important record of this legendary event.
