EDITORS COMMENTS
This delightful caricature captures the essence of the camaraderie and competition between two of the most renowned jockeys of the Victorian era: Fred Archer and George Fordham. The image, dated 1882, was drawn during a race meet at Goodwood, a popular racing venue in England during the 1880s. Fred Archer, depicted on the left, was known for his dashing good looks and impeccable riding style. He was a dominant figure in British horse racing, winning the Derby twice and the 1,000 Guineas three times. Archer's tragic end came in 1886, when he took his own life at the age of 29, leaving the racing world in shock. George Fordham, on the right, was a seasoned jockey who had been riding since the 1860s. He was a formidable competitor, with a strong build and a fierce determination. Fordham's career was marked by numerous victories, including the St. Leger Stakes in 1873. The caricature shows the two jockeys in their racing attire, complete with their distinctive caps. Archer is depicted with a smirk, while Fordham looks determined and focused. The image captures the playful banter and friendly rivalry between the two sportsmen, as they prepare for another day of racing at Goodwood. This caricature is a testament to the rich history of horseracing in Victorian England and the colorful characters that made the sport so popular during that era. It is a reminder of the passion, skill, and camaraderie that continues to define the world of horse racing to this day.
