EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures a bustling scene on Cowbridge Road in Cardiff, circa 1911. At the left edge of the image, the imposing presence of the Cardiff Union Workhouse stands tall, its Gothic Revival architecture a stark contrast to the activity unfolding on the street before it. The workhouse, a place of last resort for the destitute and the infirm, was a symbol of the social welfare system in place during this era. The street is a hive of activity, with a horse-drawn tram making its way down the center, its tracks cutting a distinct line through the cobblestones. Horses and carts laden with goods jostle for space with pedestrians, many of whom are dressed in the fashion of the early 20th century. A cyclist, clad in knickers and a jersey, rides confidently along the side of the road, adding to the sense of movement and energy. The Cardiff Union Workhouse, now known as St. Fagans National Museum of History, played a significant role in the social and historical fabric of the city. It served as a place of refuge for those in need, providing shelter, food, and medical care in exchange for labor. The photograph offers a glimpse into the past, transporting us back in time to an era of horse-drawn transport, Victorian fashion, and the complex social fabric of a growing industrial city.
