Caedmon, a humble and uneducated man, was known for his simple and profound religious poetry. According to the Venerable Bede, the renowned English historian, Caedmon experienced a life-altering dream one fateful night. In his sleep, an angelic being visited him, commanding him to "sing me a song." Surprised and unsure of his abilities, Caedmon confessed that he could not create poetry. The angel, however, encouraged him, offering the first lines of a hymn, which Caedmon then expanded upon, creating the first known Old English poem.
