EDITORS COMMENTS
Business as Usual" revue by F.W. Mark and Albert P. de Courville: A Contrast of War and Whimsy This image, created by renowned artist John Hassall, is a striking representation from the "Business as Usual" revue by F.W. Mark and Albert P. de Courville, first produced at the London Hippodrome on November 16, 1914. The jovial salesman, surrounded by four contented pigs donning German helmets, may initially deceive the viewer into believing this production to be a light-hearted and whimsical affair. However, a closer look reveals the underlying theme of the First World War that dominated the revue. Beyond the playful scene depicted in Hassall's drawing, "Business as Usual" presented a stark contrast with the harsh realities of the war. The revue included poignant depictions of wounded soldiers and a powerful cavalry charge, reflecting the grim reality of the ongoing conflict. The image, dated 1911, was later toured to the Kings Theatre in Southsea on June 28, 1916. The juxtaposition of the cheerful salesman and the pigs in military headgear against the backdrop of the war served as a poignant reminder of the absurdity and irony of the situation, highlighting the ability of art and entertainment to provide a momentary escape from the harsh realities of war. This evocative image is a testament to the power of art to capture the essence of a historical moment, offering a glimpse into the complexities of the human experience during the First World War.
