Bench 30 at Abadan

Abadan is a city on Abadan Island in the Khuzestan province in southwestern Iran, close to the border with Iraq. Rich oil fields were discovered in the area in the early 20th century. The Anglo-Persian Oil Company built their first pipeline terminus oil refinery in Abadan, in 1909, which had become the largest in the world by 1938. The whole site was destroyed during fighting in the Iran/Iraq war in 1980. This building is labelled as Bench 30 at Abadan

EDITORS COMMENTS
Bench 30 at Abadan: A Historical Snapshot of Iran's Oil Industry This evocative photograph captures Bench 30 at Abadan, a significant landmark in the rich industrial history of Iran. Located on Abadan Island in the southwestern Khuzestan province, Abadan was once a bustling city known for its vast oil fields and the Anglo-Persian Oil Company's (APOC) pioneering exploration and production efforts. The image showcases a weathered bench, bearing the number 30, situated amidst the desolate ruins of what was once a thriving oil refinery. The backdrop includes the remnants of industrial structures, such as chimneys, pipe lines, and petrochemical facilities, which were instrumental in transforming Abadan into a global petroleum hub. The Anglo-Persian Oil Company, later known as British Petroleum (BP), established the first pipeline terminus and oil refinery in Abadan in 1909. By 1938, this refinery had grown to become the largest in the world. However, the city and its industrial infrastructure were destroyed during the Iran-Iraq War in 1980. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the historical significance of Abadan as a crucial player in the global oil industry. The bench, a seemingly insignificant object, stands as a testament to the past glories and the resilience of this once prosperous city. The ruins of the refinery and its associated facilities, including Bench 30, now stand as a historical monument, bearing witness to the industrious spirit and the transformative power of oil exploration and production.
