EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, dated 1969, captures the majestic presence of two iconic British V-bombers, the Handley Page HP-80 Victor SR-2 and the Avro Vulcan, parked side by side at Upper Heyford Air Base in England. The Royal Air Force (RAF) base, located in Oxfordshire, was a significant site for the storage and maintenance of the RAF's V-bomber fleet during the Cold War era. The Handley Page HP-80 Victor SR-2, registration XL165, is seen on the left side of the image. The Victor was a versatile long-range strategic bomber, capable of carrying both conventional and nuclear weapons. With a wingspan of 114 feet and a length of 102 feet, the Victor was a formidable presence in the skies. The SR-2 variant, seen here, was the maritime reconnaissance version of the Victor, equipped with advanced radar and sensor systems for maritime patrol and anti-submarine warfare. On the right side of the photograph is the Avro Vulcan, registration XH534. The Vulcan was another iconic British V-bomber, known for its distinctive delta wing design. With a maximum speed of over 500 miles per hour and a range of over 2,000 miles, the Vulcan was a formidable long-range bomber that saw action during the Falklands War. The photograph also shows evidence of aerial refueling, with a tanker aircraft visible in the background. This was a common sight at Upper Heyford during the Cold War era, as the V-bombers required extensive range to reach their targets and return safely. The image captures a moment in time when these magnificent machines were at the forefront of military aviation technology, standing ready to defend the United Kingdom and its allies.
