EDITORS COMMENTS
This print depicts Gaius Julius Caesar Augustus, the first Roman Emperor, who ruled from 27 BC to 14 AD. Originally known as Gaius Octavius or Octavianus, he was born in 63 BC in Velitrae, near Rome. Octavianus rose to power through his alliance with Julius Caesar and Marcus Licinius Crassus, forming the Second Triumvirate in 43 BC. After Caesar's assassination, Octavianus became the sole ruler of the Roman Republic, eventually transforming it into the Roman Empire in 27 BC. Augustus is renowned for his political acumen, military prowess, and extensive building projects, including the Pantheon and the Mausoleum of Augustus. He also initiated the Pax Romana, a period of relative peace and stability that lasted for over two centuries. Augustus' reign marked the beginning of a new era in Roman history, characterized by autocratic rule and the establishment of the imperial system. Despite his immense power, Augustus presented himself as the restorer of the Roman Republic and maintained the facade of a constitutional government. He was also a skilled propagandist, using coins, inscriptions, and public monuments to promote his image as a benevolent ruler. Augustus' legacy continues to shape Western civilization, with his political and social reforms influencing the development of modern democracy and the concept of the executive branch in government. This print serves as a testament to the enduring legacy of Augustus, the first Roman Emperor, who left an indelible mark on history. His reign ushered in a new era of Roman power and influence, shaping the course of Western civilization for centuries to come.
