Born as Augusta Marie Luise Katharina von Sachsen-Weimar-Eisenach, she hailed from the renowned House of Wettin, a branch of the Saxon royal family. In 1850, she married the future German Emperor, Prince William of Prussia, who later ascended to the throne in 1888 following the death of his brother, Frederick III.
