EDITORS COMMENTS
February 13, 1756: The Attack on Geriah Fort This historic print depicts the momentous event of the attack on Geriah Fort, a stronghold of the Maratha pirate Tulagee Angria, located in northwest India. The fort, strategically situated on the Arabian Sea coast, had long been a thorn in the side of the British and Portuguese forces in the region. In this print, we see a combined British and Portuguese fleet under the command of admirals Pocock and Watson, preparing to launch a coordinated assault on the fort. The British and Portuguese forces, determined to put an end to Angria's piracy and maritime dominance, had assembled a formidable fleet of ships and troops to take Geriah Fort by storm. The attack commenced with a fierce naval bombardment, followed by a ground assault led by British and Portuguese troops. Angria's defenders put up a valiant resistance, but they were eventually overwhelmed by the superior numbers and firepower of the combined force. The fall of Geriah Fort marked a significant victory for the British and Portuguese in their efforts to establish control over the Arabian Sea and suppress piracy in the region. Angria, also known as Tulaji Angre or Tulaji Rao, was a powerful Maratha chieftain who had built a formidable pirate fleet and had long been a thorn in the side of European trading interests in India. With Geriah Fort in their hands, the British and Portuguese were able to secure the region and protect their commercial interests. This print is a testament to the military prowess and determination of the British and Portuguese forces in the face of a formidable adversary. It is a reminder of the rich history of maritime warfare and colonial expansion in India during the 18th century.
