EDITORS COMMENTS
In this image from ancient Greek mythology, Ascalaphius, the son of Acheron, stands before the all-powerful Zeus. The young man's face is etched with a mixture of fear and trepidation as he reveals a secret that could change the course of the gods' lives. Ascalaphius had been tasked with guarding the underworld's pomegranate seeds, forbidden fruit that Persephone, queen of the underworld, was forbidden from consuming if she was to return to the surface world each year. However, the irresistible temptation proved too strong for Persephone, and she succumbed to the seeds' allure, eating several. Determined to keep this revelation from Zeus, Hades, Persephone's husband, devised a plan to protect his wife. He sent Ascalaphius to Mount Olympus to report the news to Zeus, but with a twist. As punishment for revealing the secret, Hades ordered the river god Phlegethon to transform Ascalaphius into an owl. In the photograph, Ascalaphius is depicted with the distinctive features of an owl - large, round eyes and a beaked face - a poignant reminder of his tragic fate. The image captures the moment of transformation, with Ascalaphius' human form dissolving into feathers and beak, as he takes on his new identity as the god of death and prophecy. This mythological tale highlights the power of the gods and the consequences of betraying their trust. Ascalaphius' transformation into an owl serves as a reminder of the importance of loyalty and the far-reaching consequences of one's actions. The image is a beautiful representation of the rich history and mythology of ancient Greece, and a testament to the enduring power of storytelling.
