The Italian invasion of Ethiopia, also known as the Second Italo-Ethiopian War, began in October 1935 and lasted until May 1936. Ethiopia, the only African country to never be colonized, was a symbol of African pride and sovereignty. The Italian fascist regime, led by Benito Mussolini, sought to expand its colonial empire and assert its dominance in Africa. Despite being outnumbered and outgunned, the Ethiopian army and people put up a fierce resistance, inflicting heavy casualties on the Italian forces. The eventual Italian victory came at a great cost, with an estimated 100,000 Ethiopian civilians and soldiers killed. This photograph is a poignant reminder of the resilience and determination of the Ethiopian people during a time of war and occupation.
