EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite woodblock print captures the renowned Japanese actor Ichikawa Monnosuke in the poignant role of Yaoya Oshichi. Dated between 1818 and 1825, this print showcases Monnosuke's masterful portrayal of the tragic character. The actor is depicted seated on the floor, clad in a distinctive star-burst kimono, and intently playing the shamisen. Yaoya Oshichi is a well-known figure in Japanese folklore, the story of whom is deeply rooted in the history of Japanese theater. Oshichi was the daughter of a greengrocer in Kyoto during the late Edo period. She was in love with a young samurai named Sagikara Suetsuna, but due to their social differences, their relationship was forbidden. Tragically, Oshichi took her own life in a blaze of passion when she believed Suetsuna had been killed in battle. Monnosuke's portrayal of Oshichi was highly acclaimed, and this print serves as a testament to his exceptional acting skills. The intricate details of the woodblock print, from the delicate folds of Monnosuke's kimono to the expressive lines on his face, bring the character to life. The print also provides a glimpse into the rich cultural history of Japanese theater and the enduring legacy of its greatest performers.
