Yaoya Oshichi is a well-known figure in Japanese folklore, the story of whom is deeply rooted in the history of Japanese theater. Oshichi was the daughter of a greengrocer in Kyoto during the late Edo period. She was in love with a young samurai named Sagikara Suetsuna, but due to their social differences, their relationship was forbidden. Tragically, Oshichi took her own life in a blaze of passion when she believed Suetsuna had been killed in battle. Monnosuke's portrayal of Oshichi was highly acclaimed, and this print serves as a testament to his exceptional acting skills.
