EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the essence of "Last Judgment and the Burying of the Dead" also known as the seventh work of Mercy. At its center, Christ sits majestically on a globe, surrounded by a vibrant rainbow. With arms raised high, he exudes divine power and compassion. The sky above is teeming with angels blowing trumpets, holding up crosses and bibles, and carrying swords or lily branches. On earth, two contrasting scenes unfold. On the left side, souls who have been saved rise from their graves in glorious resurrection. Their expressions radiate hope and joy as they embrace eternal life. In stark contrast on the right side, damned souls accompanied by menacing devils depict an agonizing fate that awaits those who did not find redemption. In the midst of this cosmic drama stands a group of somber men dressed in black robes solemnly burying a coffin. This poignant moment represents both mortality and our human responsibility to honor and lay to rest our departed loved ones. Created between 1560-1570 by Bernard van Orley or someone from his circle, this panel painting showcases remarkable artistry through its use of oil paint on support measuring 218 cm in height and 190 cm in width.
