EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the bustling atmosphere of the Goods Shed at Preston's West Lancashire Station in 1927. Stepping into the past, we are transported to Cantrell and Cochrane depot, where an employee can be seen diligently maneuvering a crate across the store. Once a vital hub for goods transportation, this historic railway station was also known as Fishergate Hill Station. While passenger services ceased in 1900, this industrious location continued to thrive as a center for goods traffic until its closure in 1965. The interior of this impressive warehouse showcases the sheer scale and efficiency required to handle such operations during that era. Sadly, time has taken its toll on this once vibrant landmark, and it was eventually demolished. Today, Colman Court stands proudly upon its former site. However, thanks to Historic England Archive's preservation efforts through photography like this one, we can still appreciate and learn from our rich industrial heritage. This remarkable image not only offers us a glimpse into the daily workings of yesteryears but also serves as a testament to human ingenuity and progress within our ever-evolving transportation systems. Let us cherish these glimpses into history that remind us of how far we have come while honoring those who paved the way for modern advancements in logistics and infrastructure.
