Waterspouts seen off Malta, 1856. Creator: Unknown

Waterspouts seen off Malta, 1856. The weather was just what one may expect in the Mediterranean at this time of year - the sea smooth, the sky cloudless, and the atmosphere calm. At one p.m. a large spreading cloud arose in the north-east, sprinkling a few drops of rain...and then, gradually contracting, it settled low down in the horizon astern. The two centre waterspouts (of enormous size) formed first, the others followed in rapid succession, and in five minutes no fewer than ten were distinctly visible at the same time, and proceeding from the same cloud. Their distance from us was six miles. They were visible a quarter of an hour, and then passed away to the south-west, two of them bursting on the land. The island to the right...is Galita, and the point of land to the left, C. Senat, Africa. The base of the cloud was very dark, gradually shaded off towards the top. Harry Caiger'. EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, taken in 1856, captures the awe-inspiring sight of waterspouts off the coast of Malta. The tranquil Mediterranean Sea, with its smooth surface and clear blue waters, contrasts starkly with the ominous clouds looming in the distance. The weather, as described by the observer, Harry Caiger, was initially calm and serene, with clear skies and a peaceful atmosphere. However, at one o'clock in the afternoon, a large, spreading cloud arose in the north-east, casting a few raindrops over the sea. As the cloud gradually contracted and settled low down in the horizon astern, two enormous waterspouts formed. In quick succession, eight more waterspouts appeared, and for a quarter of an hour, a total of ten waterspouts were visible at the same time. The waterspouts, which emerged from the same cloud, were a sight to behold. They were located six miles away from the observer and were visible for fifteen minutes before they passed away to the south-west. Two of the waterspouts burst on the land, adding to the drama of the scene. The island to the right of the photograph is Galita, and the point of land to the left is C. Senat, Africa. The base of the cloud was very dark, gradually shading off towards the top. This photograph is a testament to the unpredictable and mesmerizing power of nature, captured in a moment in time.
