Waist Cloth (Kain Panjeng), 1800s - early 1900s. Creator: Unknown
Waist Cloth (Kain Panjeng), 1800s - early 1900s. Unlike the Chinese and sometimes European motifs of Northern Javanese batiks, the motifs represented on the batiks of central Java are indigenous. However, due to the influence of Islam, they are represented in a very abstract, stylized fashion. In this batik, a celestial scene--probably signifying the ritual renewal of community life and prosperity--is repeated against a background of small filling motifs. The scene consists of a ship (represented as a divided bow and stern) bearing a Tree of Life, which signifies the communitys passage to renewed life; on either side of the ship is a winged pavilion; and above is a sacred mountain, the abode of the gods, with a shrine

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a Waist Cloth (Kain Panjeng) from the 1800s to early 1900s, created by an unknown artist. Unlike the batiks of Northern Javanese origin that often feature Chinese or European motifs, this piece represents indigenous designs found in central Java. However, due to Islamic influence, these motifs are depicted in a highly abstract and stylized manner. The main motif featured on this batik is a celestial scene that likely symbolizes the ritual renewal of community life and prosperity. This scene is repeated against a backdrop of intricate filling motifs. At its center lies a ship with divided bow and stern, representing the community's journey towards renewed existence. Adorning either side of the ship are winged pavilions while above it stands a sacred mountain - home to gods - complete with an accompanying shrine. Crafted from cotton, this heritage art textile provides us with insight into Indonesia's rich cultural history. Preserved within The Cleveland Museum of Art collection, this remarkable piece serves as a testament to the skill and creativity of its anonymous creator. Through its vibrant colors and symbolic imagery, this Waist Cloth invites viewers into an enchanting world where tradition meets spirituality. It reminds us of our connection to ancient customs and rituals that continue to shape communities today.
