EDITORS COMMENTS
This photo print, titled "Tobit, c1470" showcases the artistic brilliance of Henry Shaw. The scene depicted here is from a French translation by Guiart de Moulins of Peter Comestor's Historia Scolastica. In this moment frozen in time, we witness Tobit, a blind and sick man, bidding farewell to his son Tobias as he embarks on a journey to the city of Rages. The focal point of the image is Tobit's wife Anna, diligently tending to their meager hearth. Using a jack to hang a pot over the fire, she demonstrates her resourcefulness and resilience amidst their poverty-stricken circumstances. Both Tobit and Anna have endured immense suffering as God tested their faith through adversity. This artwork not only captures an intimate domestic setting but also serves as an allegory for piety in challenging times. Despite their hardships, Tobit and Anna are held up as examples of unwavering devotion to their religious beliefs. Shaw's attention to detail brings this medieval scene to life with vibrant colors and intricate textures. From the intricately carved cupboard in the background to the cozy bedchamber ambiance created by the fireplace, every element adds depth and authenticity. Through this remarkable print, we are transported back in time - witnessing both everyday life during the 15th century and experiencing timeless themes such as faith, love within marriage, health struggles, and human resilience against all odds.
