EDITORS COMMENTS
This image showcases a testimonial presented to Charles Fitzgerald, the former Governor of Western Australia, in August 1855. The gift, a magnificent candelabrum, was crafted by the esteemed London-based company, Hunt and Roskell, located on New Bond-street. The ornate candelabrum, adorned with intricate designs, stands as a symbol of the deep respect and gratitude of the Western Australian colonists towards Fitzgerald's seven-year tenure as their governor. The base of the candelabrum bears an inscription that speaks volumes about the sentiment behind this generous offering. It reads, "Presented to Charles Fitzgerald, Esq. R.N. [Royal Navy], by a portion of the Colonists of Western Australia, as a tribute of their esteem and respect, and in grateful acknowledgment of his zealous and upright exertions in promoting the interests of the Colony during a period of seven years' administration of the Government." The image, published in the "Illustrated London News" in 1857, captures the essence of the colonial era, with the candelabrum surrounded by lush palm trees and men in British military uniforms. The presence of a dog adds a touch of nature and playfulness to the scene. The wood engraving, produced by an unknown artist, serves as a testament to the appreciation and admiration of the colonists for their former governor. The candelabrum, a beautiful piece of tableware, stands as a reminder of the significant role Fitzgerald played in the history of Western Australia during the British colonial era.
