EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, taken in 1856, captures the grandeur of The Royal Italian Opera's production of "Trovatore" at the newly renovated Lyceum Theatre in London. The opera, which featured the mezzo soprano Constance Nantier Didiee as the gypsy Azucena and Madame Jenny Ney as Leonora, was a major event in the 19th century British arts scene. The image reveals the interior of the theatre, showcasing the ornate decoration by Ponsonby of Piccadilly. The whole aspect of the theatre had undergone significant changes since its acquisition by Mr. Gye. The original boxes were divided into three by a slender partition, and the small chandeliers were replaced with a central one of ample dimensions, supplied by Kirby of Greek-street. The interior design was a marvel, with the proscenium framed by richly decorated curtains and the balconies adorned with elegant balustrades. The audience, dressed in their finest attire, are seen in the foreground, their attention focused on the performers on stage. Among them are men and women, some standing and others seated in the boxes. In the background, the prompter in the prompter's box is seen carefully following the script, ensuring the seamless delivery of the performance. The opera "Trovatore," by Giuseppe Verdi, was a popular work of the time, with the real heroine being the gypsy Azucena, personated by Mdlle. Didiee. Madame Jenny Ney's portrayal of Leonora deepened the impression she had made the previous year. The production was a testament to the power of music and the arts to transport and captivate audiences, making the Lyceum Theatre a hub of cultural activity in 19th century Britain.
