The Right Rev. Francis Jeune, D.D. Bishop Designate of Peterborough, 1864. Creator: Unknown

The Right Rev. Francis Jeune, D.D. Bishop Designate of Peterborough, 1864. Engraving from a photograph by Messrs. J. and C. Watkins....the new Bishop of Peterborough entered upon one of the Jersey foundations at Pembroke College, Oxford, graduated B.A. in 1827, and, having taken first-class honours in classics, was chosen Fellow of his college. For several years subsequently he held a college tutorship, and was appointed Examiner in 1834. He next became Head Master of King Edward's School, Birmingham, taking, at the same time, his degree of D.C.L. In 1838 he was appointed Dean of Jersey, and obtained the mastership of Pembroke College in 1843, When the question of University reform was in agitation, Dr. Jeune was chosen one of the Commissioners who were directed to inquire into the state of the University of Oxford. In 1859 he was appointed Vice-Chancellor of the University of Oxford, an office which he held for the three following years. During a part of this time the Prince of Wales was an Undergraduate of the University. Dr. Jeune was appointed Dean of Lincoln towards the close of last year. He is now raised to the see of Peterborough'. From "Illustrated London News", 1864
