The Prince of Wales receiving the survivors of the Defence of Lucknow...1876. Creator: C.R
The Prince of Wales receiving the survivors of the Defence of Lucknow, from a sketch by one of our special artists, 1876. In order to give more effect to the ceremony of laying the stone, which the Prince performed, the troops presenting arms and artillery saluting, the survivors of the native defenders had been collected from Oude and other parts of India. These, in their old uniforms, were drawn up close at hand...Among those present was old Ungud, the famous spy, and Carronjee Lai], the companion of Kavanagh in his daring venture. The Prince spoke very kindly of them at the native entertainment on the next evening. Altogether, taking all the circumstances into consideration, the scene was most touching; and more than one eye filled with tears as the veterans filed past'. From "Illustrated London News", 1876

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative image from the Illustrated London News in 1876, we see The Prince of Wales, later King Edward VII, receiving the survivors of the Defence of Lucknow. The scene takes place after the prince had laid the stone for the new Residency building in Lucknow, India. The soldiers, dressed in their old uniforms, are drawn up close by, presenting arms and saluting in honor of their prince. Among them are notable figures such as Ungud, the famous spy, and Carronjee Lai, who had accompanied Kavanagh in a daring venture during the Sepoy Rebellion of 1857. The Prince of Wales speaks kindly to these veterans during a native entertainment on the following evening, making the scene all the more poignant. The image captures the essence of the British Raj in India, with soldiers in military uniforms and traditional Indian attire, such as harem pants and headdresses, coming together in a display of unity and respect. The image is a testament to the British Empire's military might and the enduring impact of colonialism on India's people. The Prince's gestures and the soldiers' presentations add to the sense of solemnity and importance, making for a powerful and moving image from the 19th century.
