At the Necropolis Companys station, Westminster Bridge Road, London, c1900 (1903). The London Necropolis Railway was opened in 1854 as an alternative to the overcrowding in Londons graveyards and cemeteries. The railway connected Waterloo to the Brookwood Cemetery in Brookwood, Surrey. In 1899 the location of the terminus was blocking the expansion of Waterloo Station and was transferred to Westminster Bridge Road, with the original station being demolished in 1902. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the bustling scene at the Necropolis Company's station on Westminster Bridge Road in London around 1900. The London Necropolis Railway, established in 1854, was a unique solution to address the overcrowding in the city's graveyards and cemeteries. This railway line connected Waterloo Station to Brookwood Cemetery in Surrey. In this image, we see a snapshot of Victorian-era transportation and industry. Men dressed in traditional attire can be seen going about their daily activities, creating a sense of movement and life within this otherwise somber setting. The train platform is filled with people waiting for their journey to either bid farewell or pay respects to their departed loved ones. The relocation of the terminus from Waterloo Station to Westminster Bridge Road was necessary due to expansion constraints. This change led to the demolition of the original station building in 1902, making this photograph even more valuable as it captures an important moment during this transition period. As we delve into this historical image, it serves as a reminder of how society dealt with death during that time – through innovative means such as dedicated burial railways like the London Necropolis Railway. It also offers us a glimpse into early 20th-century Britain and its evolving transport infrastructure. This remarkable print from Living London by George R. Sims allows us to reflect on our past while appreciating how far we have come since then.
